Good evening dolls~
ILD is tomorrow, and it almost completely slipped my mind! Since I don’t have any plans (yet!) I decided the least I could do is help you come up with ways to celebrate it! Since I know a lot of people don’t have a comm near them, or can’t go to meetups, many of these ideas can be done on your own! If you are a lone lolita, let me know either in the comments or a message on social media if you’d like me to do a little live stream so we can hang out together!
ILD stands for International Lolita Day. It’s a biannual holiday created for celebrating lolita fashion! It occurs on the first Saturday of both June and December. Many comms have meetups ranging from casual get together to extravagent tea parties. For newer or younger lolitas, this is a perfect way to test the waters of wearing the fashion in public. Sometimes, a convention will have extra lolita themed events on Saturday if it falls on ILD, like panels, Q&As, and workshops.
Tea – The default lolita meet
High Tea – A great excuse to bust out the OTT dress that’s been in the back of your closet.
Craft afternoon – Make decoden compacts, corsages, or hair accessories with a group or by yourself.
Take a skill class – Learn to decorate a cake, make a quilt, style a bouquet, or embroider a hankerchief!
Shopping – If you live near a brand store, now’s the time to treat yourself!
Thrifting – The best way to add uniqueness to your closet is through vintage blouses and brooches and jewelry. (Oh my!)
Boardwalk meetup – Bust out your sailor collar blouse and the sea salt caramels for a cute summer meetup.
Beach meetup – Mermaid coords? Yes please! You can even collect shells to add to hair pins and necklaces.
Museum meetup – Another oldie but a goodie. Bonus points for wearing a coord based on a painting!
Pool meetup – Break out those donut pool rings and ruffled swimsuits to beat the heat.
Mini fashion show – Divide into groups and have each pick a brand. Then, design a coord based on the brand’s aesthetic. Have a judge pick the best one for a mini prize!
Lifestyle meetup – Make a list of stereotypical lifestyle loli ideas and see how many you can accomplish!
Alterations – Every lolita has that one blouse with a missing button, or a dress with ripped lace. Now’s the time to repair it! Even more fun with a group, since you can swap stories about how the accident happened!
Baking – Break out those frilly aprons that come with some of BABY and AP’s dresses and bake cakes, cookies, scones, etc. This is a great idea if you’re having a picnic later.
Old School – Try to create the most old school coord you can. I’m talking lacy bonnets, rectangle head dresses, and even black x white a la BABY.
New School – Predict the next fashion trend in lolita, and base your coord about it. I’m hoping those all-over embroidered dresses come back into style…
Style Swap – Sure, swapping styles with a friend is fun, but for extra challenge, try a whole other fashion style, like visual kei or gyaru.
Fair – I know around my town fairs are already popping up, so use it as an opprotunity to take kitschy pictures and eat as much cotton candy as you can!
Strawberry picking – Break out the strawberry prints and go picking! See who can collect the most, and then make AP styled desserts with them!
Photoshoot – Could easily go with the lifestyle lolita idea. Pick a theme and a backdrop, or if you’re tech-savy, use a green screen and make yourself a brand ad!
Wishlisting – Spend the entire day creating an ultimate wishlist, it doesn’t have to be practical. Then, make a goal to own at least one item by next month, next ILD, or next year.
Bookstore – Visit an old bookstore or library and see how many old copies of fairytales you can find, and compare the covers to the newer versions you see at B&N.
Cafe hopping – Try one thing from each cafe you pass by today, or have one part of your meal at a different cafe.
Spa day – Get your nails done to match your dress! You’d be surprised how much more put together a coord can look with nice nails.
Volunteering – Look into visiting children at your local hospital. They’d get a kick out of seeing a princess. If you’re with a comm, have everyone do a princess matching their substyle
Flower picking – Like strawberry picking, but use flowers to press, dry, preserve, or make accessories and recipes out of.
Ice Skating – Another way to beat the heat is to go ice skating! Just don’t wear your nicest coord, you might be spending some time sitting on the ice if you’ve never skated before!
Picnic – Whether it be a cute gingham-blanket-picnic or a table-and-cloth-picninc, it’s always an easy way to spend ILD.
Movie day – Kamikaze Girls and Marie Antoinette are absolute musts of course!
Victorian day – Break out the bustle skirts, hand fans, and victorian ettiquete books. Can make for a nice challenge during high tea – Who can use the most propper manners?
Anime Day – Put together a mahou shoujo coord and watch all the girly, retro anime your heart desires.
Housewife style I’ve always felt lolita and 50’s-housewife-aesthetic go well together. Break out the polka dots, pearls, and aprons. Oh, and don’t forget to tie up your hair!
Summer celebration – Cookouts are a twist if you’re getting tired of picnics. Hang string lights in the backyard, and make sure to pick up some bug repelling oil lamps.
Summer Christmas – A good way to use up the rest of the left over wrapping paper. Also, who doesn’t love gifts?
Heat Essential crafternoon – Gather tote bags, sunglasses, water bottles, parasols, and flip flops. Then, spend the afternoon decorating them!
Lolita Pets meet – Use waist ties that you no longer need to make cute collars for your pets!
Swap Meet – Another classic meet. Trade some of your older items with a friend. This is an easy way of adding new items to your closet without spending money.
G&LB meet – Pull out all of your old Gothic Lolita Bibles and try all the crafts, recipes, and tutorials you can! If you have really old issues along with the newer ones, you can compare how styles have changed throught the years!
Recreating coords – Find those old pictures of your first coords and try to recreate them! If you have a group, whose was the most cringe worthy?
First ____ Memories – We all have memories of our first time seeing lolita fashion, our first coord, and the first positive and negative reactions we received. Share yours! (Tag me in them too! IG: @stellar_dolly Tumblr: @stellar-dolly)
